In the Wake of U.S. Cuts, African Leaders Advance Recommendations for a Sustainable HIV Response

Posted in CIGH In the News

Amid historic cuts to U.S. global health funding, Ministries of Health and AIDS Commissions from 11 African countries gathered in Malawi to chart a sustainable path forward for HIV prevention. Co-chaired by CIGH Director Dr. Charles Holmes, the high-level convening focused on country-led innovations to protect hard-won gains and sustain progress despite shifting donor support.

Today, CIGH and partners launch three key outputs from this effort:
📌 A Lancet HIV Viewpoint outlining urgent priorities for sustainability and inclusion
📌 A Policy Brief endorsed by over 60 leaders with concrete, country-driven recommendations
📌 A joint Press Release with the Government of Malawi and the O’Neill Institute

“Through this work and these policy recommendations, we’re moving towards a better understanding of how we can protect gains made in the HIV response,” said Dr. Beatrice Matanje, CEO of Malawi’s National AIDS Commission. “This starts with national leadership on key reforms, including integration of HIV interventions within broader health systems, while ensuring that vulnerable groups continue to be reached effectively with the most effective interventions.”
