How Lessons from Global Health Can Improve Health And The Response To COVID-19 In The US

Dr. Charles Holmes and CIGH affiliate Dr. Eric Goosby discuss with Health Affairs how lessons from global health can improve health and the response to COVID-19 in the United States.
In our work on global health policy and as physicians in the US and abroad, we have witnessed firsthand the harmful effects of inequity. And we have seen how past US leadership in global health—through endeavors such as the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR); support for the World Health Organization, the Global Fund, and the Gavi Vaccine Alliance; US contributions to fighting Ebola; and US leadership of the Global Health Security Agenda—have made the world healthier and more equitable. We believe the values and ideals the US has expressed through these global engagements represent the US at her best, and in many cases should be emulated within the US health system.Charles Holmes and Eric Goosby in Health Affairs
