CIGH leads HIVR4P symposium in Lima on optimizing long-acting HIV PrEP

CIGH experts joined the HIVR4P conference in Lima, Peru, and together with the Government of Malawi, convened an exciting satellite session focusing on emerging data from Malawi’s long-acting PrEP rollout: “PathToScale for Injectable PrEP in Malawi: Formative insights from providers and clients and managing demand for new products.”

The session was led by Deborah Hoege and Dr. Washington Ozituosauka (in absentia) and included key collaborators from Johns Hopkins, UNC, and PSI Malawi, and highlighted emerging results from a range of formative studies, including surveys, discrete choice experiments, human-centered design and market segmentation, conducted prior to the availability of long-acting HIV PrEP in Malawi. Key findings included quantitative and qualitative client and provider preferences for options ranging from delivery sites for long-acting PrEP, preferred frequency and site of injections, and perceived barriers to initiation and continuation. Together, these results have been incorporated into Malawi’s scale-up of long-acting injectable HIV PrEP through the PathToScale Initiative, an innovative partnership including the Gates Foundation, the Government of Malawi, CIGH and numerous other partners.
