On October 15, 2025, the Georgetown Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH), the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, and the Georgetown Ethics Lab co-hosted a virtual webinar, “Ethical Use of Novel HIV Data & Analytics.” The session brought together government officials, civil society leaders, people living with HIV, and experts in big data, AI, health policy, and ethics to examine how emerging technologies are reshaping HIV programs.

As digital tools like machine learning, AI, and natural language processing become more common in predicting risk, guiding service delivery, and improving outcomes, speakers emphasized the urgent need for ethical frameworks that protect privacy, prevent bias, and uphold human rights. Drawing on a recent landmark report, panelists explored real-world examples involving data from mobile devices, social media, dating apps, and electronic medical records.

The discussion underscored that responsible innovation must be community-centered and equity-driven, offering a path forward for policymakers, researchers, and implementers to harness data for impact while safeguarding trust and dignity in the HIV response.
