Accelerating the Sustainability of HIV Programs: A Regional Convening in Malawi

Posted in Announcements & Events

From February 18-19, 2025, CIGH co-hosted a regional convening in Lilongwe, Malawi, focused on advancing sustainable HIV programming, with a focus on HIV prevention. The meeting brought together senior leaders from 11 African countries—alongside technical experts, civil society, and partners—to address urgent challenges in the face of global health funding cuts.

Discussions centered on integrating HIV prevention into primary care, strengthening digital and workforce systems, and expanding access to innovations like long-acting PrEP. CIGH Director Dr. Charles Holmes co-chaired the convening with Dr. Beatrice Matanji of Malawi’s National AIDS Commission and Dr. Lilian Chunda of the Ministry of Health.

Insights from the convening will contribute to an upcoming Lancet series on sustainability of the HIV response.

The convening was opened by the Dr. Matias Joshua, Malawi’s Chief of Health Services responsible for Reforms in the Ministry of Health, and attended by senior leaders across the region.
