New in BMJ Global Health: A Health Systems Approach to HIV Prevention Rooted in Local Leadership

A new article published in BMJ Global Health, “A health systems approach to more effective decentralised HIV prevention: development of Malawi’s Blantyre Prevention Strategy,” showcases how district-led innovation can strengthen HIV prevention where it matters most—at the local level. The paper is led by Dr. Gift Kawalazira and co-authored by partners from the Malawi Ministry of Health, National AIDS Commission, and the Georgetown Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH).
The study highlights the Blantyre Prevention Strategy (BPS) — a district-based, co-developed model designed to strengthen HIV prevention where it matters most: at the local level. BPS moves beyond fragmented, vertical approaches by embedding core public health functions within government-led systems. The strategy emphasizes local leadership, data-driven decision-making, cross-sector coordination, and the rapid introduction of new prevention tools — all aimed at achieving more sustainable, long-term HIV prevention outcomes.
